The Eurasian Otter Lutra lutra belongs to the Mustelidae family which includes weasels polecats and stoats. Although a varied group most mustelids are nocturnal good hunters and have long and agile bodies short legs and thick fur. The water loving otter is the only amphibious member of the family and is one of the largest European mustelids. Though under serious threat in much of its range the Eurasian Otter is found across Europe in North Africa and most of Asia. The Scottish population flourishes in the highlands and islands in both marine and freshwater environments.
