What’s not to like? (Don’t answer that.)

At first glance, this curious chocolate bar appears to be a hard sell (they said the same thing about chopped liver). Because even with its thin layer of delicious Nestle chocolate, no one can deny that Big Turk is an acquired taste. Inevitably, it comes down to the strange, pink jelly-like filling known in some circles as ‘Turkish Delight.’Now, it’s not nougat, and it sure isn’t caramel. So what exactly is it? And who actually eats this stuff? The answers are as elusive as Turkish Delight’s origins.

Eat like a Sultan (or one of his many wives).

Speaking of origins, one legend speaks of a Turkish Sultan and his harem, some 200 years ago. Now, without boring you with the details, the story goes that this Sultan ventured to create a sweet confection in order to keep the peace within his harem. It’s hard to think that the strange pink stuff inside Big Turk was actually created for a purpose– let alone a purpose as lofty as appeasing one’s many wives (or the modern day equivalent). Just something to think about, next time you bite into a Big Turk.

Low in fat. High in irony.

It’s funny that Big Turk’s one true advantage is also regarded as a moot point among chocolate bar enthusiasts.Strangely enough, it’s low in fat – 60% less fat than the average chocolate bar. Which is probably for the best, making for good publicity – and Big Turk can use all the good publicity it can get. In other words, help yourself to as much as you want – your hips can thank you later.

Masticate to your heart’s content.

Back to that chewy pink stuff underneath that thin layer of chocolate. Go ahead and have a chew. Or two. Or three.Ok, frankly it might take you a bit before you actually get the whole bar down.Turkish Delight is famous for working the jaw, among other things. But hey, your mamma always said “Chew your food.” You’d be making her proud.

Tripe or treat?

It’s all a matter of opinion. Divided opinion – it’s what Big Turk was founded upon. And it still as divisive today as it was back then. Let’s be honest here. Big Turk has an unusual flavour that tests even the most resilient of taste buds.

But when all is said and done, one thing’s for certain: despite its admittedly odd qualities, Big Turk has a small, but loyal following. And that, it would seem, makes all the difference when it comes to Big Turk’s longevity. And endure it has. Sure, there will always be detractors - when you’re as unique as Big Turk, it comes with the territory. But in the end, love it or loathe it, Big Turk (much like liver) is here to stay.
