Anas Acuta
Valley Canoe Products (VCP)
Atlantic Kayak Tours Says: Four staff members from Atlantic Kayak Tours call the Anas Acuta their
main kayak. Low volume, hard chined, rockered hull makes the Anas Acuta a playful kayak to paddle.
The rougher the water, the better the Anas Acuta performs. On flat water the rocker slows the Anas
Acuta down, but the maneuverability keeps it fun in all conditions. The low deck is great in high winds
and breaking waves. Good for small to mid sized paddlers. Most paddlers will choose a skeg, but that
does add additional weight and cost. The skeg also reduces the limited storage this kayak has. Many
of our staff don’t have a skeg and don’t have any problems. The Anas Acuta is the oldest composite
kayak on the market. It has a small but very loyal following. If you fit the Anas Acuta and have decent
paddling skills you owe it to yourself to paddle this extraordinary kayak. The hard chines gives the
Anas Acuta mostly flat surfaces on the hull, which allows for ease of repairs.
VCP Says: The Anas Acuta has a hard chined hull, in true Eskimo tradition, which gives higher static lateral
stability (i.e., it feels very stable when just sitting in the water) and has a lower hull profile than the Nordkapp.
The low windage of this boat is absolutely remarkable. It appeals to an adventuresome breed of kayaker who want
a sea kayak for playing in surf, reflecting waves, etc. and is not concerned so much with storage capacity.
The Anas Acuta is a sea kayak with a pedigree. It was designed by Geoff Blackford based on drawings of a centuriesold
design from the West Greenland village of Igdlorssuit. It is a narrow boat but it has a hard-chine hull,
in true Inuit style which gives it high lateral stability. Its low profile means a very low windage factor, but this of
course means less stowage space than in many kayaks. The Anas Acuta has considerable rocker, which together
with its light weight, makes it an ideal boat for those adventurous kayakers who use the ocean waves, surf, rock
gardens and sea caves as their playgrounds. The Anas Acuta also appeals to those paddlers who are happy to carry
a minimum amount of equipment and thus retain sporty characteristics in a crusing kayak. For extended journeys,
many people have a retractable skeg fitted to make light work of longer crossings, where cross-winds may be troublesome.
VCP kayaks, including the Anas Acuta, are distinguished by their high quality, durable construction and a
wide range of equipment options-setting them ahead of the rest.
