Frost flowers were recently spotted at Iroquois Park, but what are they?According to the Kentucky Native Plant Society, they aren't actually a flower."Frost flowers are thin ribbons of ice that form on the stems of a few species of native plants. Water from the roots is drawn up the stems and expands as it freezes, breaking the stem walls and creating a flow of ice," according to KNPS. "As the ice forms, more water freezes, forcing out ribbons of thin ice."See more photos of frost flowers at Iroquois Park below (photos courtesy of Buddy Sergesketter):These "flowers" don't just show up on any day of the year, either; conditions need to be just right.Air temperature must be below freezing, no wind should be blowing, ground temperatures must be above freezing and the soil needs to have some moisture. There are also only specific plants that can produce the frost flowers. Those include frostweed, dittany and marsh fleabane.
