Description

Geum comes from Greek meaning ‘to produce a nice smell’, referring to the clove scented rhizome, 3-7 cm long, 1-2 cm thick.

The stem is covered in soft hairs.

Shady places, woodland edges or hedgerows.

Flowers

5 yellow petals and turned back sepals.

Leaves

Trifoliate with three leaflets. Three-leaflets, sessile, middle leaf largest, serrated.

Fruits Seeds

Bur: a seed or dry fruit that has hooks or teeth.

Edible

Roots: as a substitute to cloves used in soups and to flavour ale.

Medical

Roots: Used by the Romans to treat fever. Since used to treat diarrhoea, as a tonic to stimulate appetite and as a gargle for mouth ulcers and halitosis.
