Description

A relatively short trunk compared to the height and width of the crown. Only grows in mountain forests in the Mediterranean region, of between 600-1800 m.

The wood is valued for veneer, flooring, boat building, musical instruments and kitchen utensils.

Flowers

The male catkins are tassel-like on long stalks with 5-15 stamens, the female flowers are upright on short stalks.

Elliptic oval leaf. Oval, undulated, some pointed, with stalks, 5-10 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Bur: ripens in August, splits open into 2 triangular, edible nuts, 1.5 cm long.

Edible

The nuts produce an oil used in the margarine industry.
