Description
Deciduous shrub with changing autumn colours, ranging from yellow-green to reddish purple. Wood, scrub, hedges, especially on calcareous soil.
The wood of this tree was used to make spindles.
Flowers
The flowers are insignificant, small, yellowish-green, growing in clusters (3-8).
Leaves
Elliptic oval leaf, Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Oval to long, wider in the middle, pointed, slightly serrated, 3-8 cm.
Fruits Seeds
Capsule: 4 lobes, splits open to reveal orange seeds.
Medical
Bark: to treat liver and gall bladder complaints. It is astringent, diuretic and stimulates the bile flow.
