Description

The first year the basal rosette appears; it can take several years before the plant produces a flower stalk with 1, 2 or 3 flowers. The middle and lower bracts have brown margins with spines at the tip. The name ‘diffusa’ (widespread) refers to the open branching of the plant.

Flowers

Pinkish-violet ray florets growing out of urn-shaped heads at the tip of the branches.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Basal rosette: leaves deeply lobed almost to central midrib.
Upper leaves less divided.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of small, dry, 1-seeded fruit with a plume of bristly hairs. Seed 2-3 mm long.
