Populus nigra 'Vereecken' has a columnar to oval crown with a straight trunk and steeply ascending, somewhat undulating branches. It grows somewhat broader than P. nigra 'Italica' but remains narrower than P. nigra 'Robusta'. The diamond-shaped to triangular leaves are green. The young leaves are brownish-green. In the autumn the leaves turn yellowish-green. Bears flowers in the form of male catkins. Used in wind breaks, as an avenue tree, in row plantings and landscapes. Suitable for coastal regions. Little sensitive to rust and canker. Sensitive to leaf spot disease. Good wind resistance. Winter hardiness zone: 4
