Commonly known as the Painted Buckeye or Sunrise Horse Chestnut, this is a deciduous tree grown for both its flowers and foliage. It produces large and showy, upright sprays of pale yellow flowers in spring. Sadly, these are not often followed by fruits like other Chestnut varieties. The foliage comprises large and lush foliage which emerges cream-pink in spring, ages to become cream-green, then turns dark green as the season progresses. In autumn, the leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and yellow before falling. It will eventually reach 25 m tall and 15 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site with moderate shelter. It is tolerant of cool climates, frost, and some wind once established, but must not be allowed to dry out during summer. This Horse Chestnut is commonly used as a shade tree or specimen in parks or large gardens. It is also suited to avenue planting or being incorporated into a mixed planting in a large garden.
