Zoology: Living Models (1:1)

Amber Snail

Succinea putris
Life-size model.
Foot length 22 mm long, shell 18 mm.

Particularly conspicuous are regularly occurring individuals, whose antennae are strongly swollen. The amber snail serves as an intermediate host for parasitic sucking worms of the species Leucochloridium paradoxum, whose larvae migrate into the antennae of the snails. They even change the behavior of the snail, which, contrary to your natural behavior, sit on top of the leaves and thus present themselves as food to songbirds. Songbirds are the final hosts in whose intestines the sucking worms then live.
