Anthocerotopsida

Dr. Maya C Nair

ANTHOCEROTAE
(HORNWORTS)
Anthocerotopsida

• Commonly known as Hornworts

• Plants thallose, dorsiventral lobed

• No internal differentiation of tissues

• Presence of oil bodies, smooth rhizoids

• Sporogonium without seta with bulbous

foot & intercalary meristem
Anthocerotopsida
Differ from other bryophytes in following characters :

• Presence of large chloroplast & pyrenoid in each cell

• Hypodermal origin of antheridia on dorsal side

• Completely embedded gametophyte

• Growth of sporophyte – intermediate

• Presence of columella in sporogonium

• Amphithecial origin of archesporium

• Capsule wall with stomata & photosynthetic cells

• Structure of elater differ from that of hepaticopsida - pseudoelaters

• Chromosome no.5
Other features of special interest

• Gametophyte – thallose, slightly lobbed/ radially dissected, sometime

show dichotomous branching

• Dorsi-ventrally differentiated

• Smooth walled rhizoids present

• No scales & tuberculate rhizoids

• Lateral margin –more than one cell in thickness except in Dendroceros

• No internal differentiation of tissues

Anthoceros
A hornwort with sporangia
ANTHOCEROTOPSIDA AS A SYNTHETIC GROUP

• This group combining the characters of diverse group of plants

• Have primitive type of gametophyte & advanced type of sporophyte

Features common with chlorophyta

• Presence of single large chloroplast & pyrenoid

• Simple , flat ,thallus like undifferentiated gametophyte

• Similar kind of branching in gametophyte

• Biflagellated antherozoids
FEATURES COMMON WITH PTERIDOPHYTA

• Plant body resembles with prothalli of some

pteridophytes like equisetum
• Embedded archegonia in the gametophyte
• Complex & highly developed sporogonia
• Presence of stomata & cutinized epidermis in sporophyte
• Continued growth of sporophyte due to presence of
meristem
• Presence of central columella resembling conducting
tissues of certain primitive pteridophytes
• Sporogonium resembles rootless, leafless,dichotomously
branched sporophyte of Horneophyton
FEATURES COMMON WITH HEPATICOPSIDA

• Thallus like gametophyte

• Smooth walled rhizoids present as in Jungermanniales

• Apical growth of thallus

• Similarity in archesporium
sporophytes
•Foot
•Sporogonium
•No seta
•Pseudo-elater
