A medium-sized, deciduous tree to about 25 m tall with large, broad, pinnate leaves in a spreading crown. Native to mountain forests from the Caucasus Mountains to northern Iran, it is a popular and robust ornamental for temperate regions. Its wood is highly regarded for making furniture, mainly as veneer.
