A rare, giant, deciduous tree to more than 40 m tall with large, broadly pinnate leaves that are bronze when emergent. Juglans pyriformis is native to moist forests in southern Mexico between 1200 and 2000 m. It is is closely related to or perhaps synonymous with Juglans olanchana. The latter grows further south and at lower elevations. The large nuts have edible, tasty seeds.
