A large, deciduous, sparsely branching tree to about 30 m tall with very large, broadly bipinnate foliage and clusters of white flowers followed by large pods with large, black seeds. Gymnocladus dioicus is native to eastern North America, where it is widespread but uncommon. It makes an attractive and popular ornamental tree and suitable for avenues. The seeds have been used as a substitute for coffee but they are poisonous unless well roasted.
