Found in Ireland, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czechloslavakia, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Albania, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine Western Russia, Central Russia, Siberia, Kazakastan, Kirgistan, Turkemenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Mongolia and China from sealevel to 1600 meters around moors, dune slacks and marshes in alkaline soils as a small to medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial orchid is with a long creeping rhizome carrying pubescent, purplish stems with sheathing leaves and 4 to 8 oblong to oblong-lanceolate, subacute to acuminate leaves and it blooms in the late spring and summer on a secund, laxly few to many [5 to 20] flowered inflorescence that has lanceolate bracts that are as long as or a bit shorter than the nodding flowers. Tjis species is often found in conjunction with ants and may benefit from their presence.
