The placoderms were fish with very armored jaws and dominated the seas, rivers, and lakes until they became extinct. They included some of the most unusual vertebrates that ever lived. The placoderms were very sucessful and habitated all water.
Today placoderms are an important group of vertabrates. They are useful as index fossils for giving age determinations for Devonian rocks,
