  • an perennial grass usually growing up to 1 m tall, and forming loose or dense swards and spreading by short rhizomes.
  • its leaves are up to 15 cm long, scabrid, and flat or rolled.
  • its openly branched seed-heads are lax and with many spreading branches.
  • these seed-heads are made up of numerous purplish brown to greenish spikelets 1.5-3 mm long.
  • its seeds are about 1 mm long.
