Lavandula angustifolia (English Lavender)

A showy, fragrant, semi-woody, herbaceous perennial with narrow gray-green leaves and purple flowers on terminal spikes that bloom from June to August. Harvested for the use of its oils in perfumes, the flowers and foliage are popular additions to sachets and potpourris. English lavender varieties are more often used for culinary purposes, such as tea, than other types of lavender. A dense, mounded form can be maintained by pruning. Works well for garden borders and containers. Prefers full sun and moderate moisture; well-drained soil is a must and protection from winter wind is recommended. Lavender attracts butterflies and bees, while tolerating rabbit, deer, drought, dry soil, shallow or rocky soil, air pollution, and pruning. 2-3'H x 2-4'W. USDA Zones 5-8.
