Characteristics:
Habit
A powerful, large tree with a broad, round crown, 20-35 m tall, 15-20 m wide; usually with short stem, branches diagonally extended, the lower twigs horizontal to overhanging; 40-60 (120) cm a year the first 20 years; conspicuous cream-white; fast-growing
Blossom
Dioecious, yellow-green catkins before leaves shoot
Leaves
Like maple leaves on the youngest twigs, 3 to 5-lobed, the other leaves ovoid and coarsely toothed, white tomentose during shooting, later dark green on top, whitish underneath; pale yellow in autumn
Roots
Flat and extremely far-reaching, deeper on soil that is not too moist; tends to form runners; grows into pipes, tolerates covering and short floods
Demands
Sun to light shade, tolerates heat, likes warmth, frost hardy, does not grow well - more thicket-like - in dry areas, good for urban areas; tolerant of wind in the first few decades, sensitive when old
Soil
Fresh to moist, avoid stagnant dampness, on all nutritious, slightly acidic to alkaline substrates; somewhat tolerant of salt
Tips
Do not cut in late winter or spring as the wounds bleed heavily
