Fly honeysuckle Harilik kuslapuu Lonicera xylosteum
We know the fly honeysuckle shrub from its greyish-green leaves, placed oppositely, oval or egg-shaped and with a fringed margin (ciliate). Hairy on top and very softly hairy on the underside. The shrub can grow up to three meters high, seldom more, in forests, meadows and city parks.
The berries have a glossy surface, a beautiful colour and seem juicy. Good then that the poisonous fruits are insipid, even with a slightly unpleasant taste: thus hardly anyone will eat a life-threatening amount of them. Quite often two fruits have fused at the base. The pretty shrub is a good honey plant when it flowers despite its toxicity.
Fly honeysuckles that grow densely on fertile soil in forests and spruce groves can make them almost impenetrable to pass.
