Chrysopidae (Green Lacewing) Identification

In the British Isles there are 21 species of Chrysopidae, only a few of these can be confidently identified from photographs.

When identifying chrysopids you have to be aware of some relatively subtle features on the wing and the body. Below are some of the features which we help you to identify the species:

Looking at two veins in the forewing, the Pseudomedia (Psm) and Psc (Pseudocubitus), is a good way to start seperating what group of species you may have.

If these veins reach the posterior wing margin (see below) then you specimen is in the subfamily Chrysopinae (click the link).

If these veins curve towards the wing apex (see below) then your specimen is in the genus Nothochrysa (click the link).
