Five-spot Ladybird

Coccinella quinquepunctata

The Five-spot Ladybird (Coccinella quinquepunctata) is the smallest representative of the genus Coccinella in Northwestern Europe measuring just 3-5mm.
Coccinella quinquepunctata 5-spot Ladybird beetle, the smaller one of our native Coccinellas Coccinella,Coccinella quinquepunctata,Coccinellidae,Coccinellinae,Coleoptera,Five-spot Ladybird,nl: Vijfstippelig lieveheersbeestje

Appearance

Normally it carries two spots on each elytron - a larger central one and a smaller apical spot, but additional (small) spots are frequent. Also quite frequently the spots are "eye spots", where the black spots have a thin lighter orange lining around them.
The mature larvae can be easily distinguished from the larvae of the other species in the genus (in NW Europe) due to the extra orange spots on the sixth and seventh abdominal segments.
