Variable Longhorn Beetle (Stenocorus meridianus)
I spent today (my third) looking for the elusive Brown Hairstreak Butterfly.
Tired and sun burn, I was on my way back to my bicycle when this surprisingly large beetle flew right past my face.
Another surprise is that most references have the adult Stenocorus meridianus flying "in May and June. Yet here it was in the second week of August.
Unfortunately, it's not my best video, but still worth a gander :
''Stenocorus meridianus'' is a species of longhorn beetle in the Lepturinae subfamily that can be found anywhere in Europe, Caucasus, and Kazakhstan. They are 15–27 millimetres. The species have brown coloured legs, but can have either black or brown coloured prothorax. They occasionally feed on deciduous trees such as elm, maple, and oak. The species life cycle is from 2–3 years, with a flight time from May–July.
