Pied Wagtail (Motacilla alba yarrellii) This Pied Wagtail (or Water Wagtail) is a sub species found almost exclusively in the UK and is very much a sedentary bird compared to its migrating cousin the White Wagtail, found throughout Europe and elsewhere.<br />

Almost continually in motion &amp; quite diminutive, it can be tricky to photograph, so I&#039;m grateful for this i9ndividual hopping on to a wall close by.<br />

This Pied Wagtail (or Water Wagtail) is a sub species found almost exclusively in the UK and is very much a sedentary bird compared to its migrating cousin the White Wagtail, found throughout Europe and elsewhere.

  1. lovely picture, and very interesting indeed!
    As far as I know, we don't have a sub-species level on Jungledragon - so I added the White Wagtail species identification.
    Fredy will probably correct me if I'm wrong :-)

    1. You're not wrong :)

      Technically, it is possible to create a sub species but it would just be a species record with the sub species name. So for example:

      "A B" - species
      "A B C" - sub species

      To JungleDragon, "A B C" is seen as just another species. It has no concept of it being related to "A B". So practically speaking, it's possible to ID to sub species yet it's not possible to see the relation between a species and sub species.

The white wagtail is a small passerine bird in the wagtail family Motacillidae, which also includes the pipits and longclaws. This species breeds in much of Europe and Asia and parts of north Africa. It is resident in the mildest parts of its range, but otherwise migrates to Africa. It has a toehold in Alaska as a scarce breeder. In the British Isles the darker sub-species the pied wagtail predominates.
