I initially spotted the larger orangy-brown fruiting bodies of the jelly fungus on several Downy Birch trees. As I looked closer I could then see several of these tiny, very dark fungal like growths. The granulation only became obvious when viewed through a hand lens and also later once photographed. The sizes ranged from 1-2mm in length and the same in height. Some had obvious stems, others appeared to be stemless on the branch of the Downy Birch tree to which they were all attached.
The jelly fungus is fairly common in my location but I don't recall having seen the black fungal growths previously.
