lower stem of Sphagnum russowii (multi-colored sphagnum), collected from opening in eastern white cedar swamp with black spruce throughout - key features were tongue-shaped stem leaves (occasionally notched), 2 spreading branches, 1-2 hanging branches, stellate head (resembles S. girgensohnii), red coloration sporadic depending on the amount of light the plants receive
