Silver-bordered Fritillary

Boloria selene

Summary 5

The Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary (Boloria selene), called the Silver-bordered Fritillary in North America, is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago, Illinois is conducting a DNA research experiment on Boloria selene.

General description 6

One of two Boloria with a silver-spotted underside. The Bog Fritillary (B. eunomia) is somewhat similar, but the submarginal row of hindwing underside spots is black in selene and cream in eunomia. Alberta populations have been asigned to subspecies atrocostalis (Bird et al. 1995, Layberry et al. 1998).

Distribution 7

A holarctic species, occuring in Eurasia and throughout the temperate and subarctic region of North America, from Alaska to New England and Colorado (Scott 1986).

Habitat 8

Moist meadows, fens and bogs.

Migration 9

Non-Migrant: No. All populations of this species make significant seasonal migrations.

Locally Migrant: No. No populations of this species make local extended movements (generally less than 200 km) at particular times of the year (e.g., to breeding or wintering grounds, to hibernation sites).

Locally Migrant: No. No populations of this species make annual migrations of over 200 km.

Conservation status 10

Not of concern.

Threats 11

Degree of Threat: D : Unthreatened throughout its range, communities may be threatened in minor portions of the range or degree of variation falls within natural variation

Taxonomy 12

Comments: This has traditionally been treated as a Holarctic species. However, some authors such as Pohl et al. (2010) argue that North American populations should be treated as a different species, in which case Boloria myrina would be the species name in North America, otherwise subspecies concepts would be unaffected.
