A slime mould - Badhamia lilacina
This is a species found in Sphagnum bogs, in areas of high rainfall. The habitat is a boggy area beside a NS3681 : Footpath following the edge of the woods.

Compared to fungi (for example), slime moulds can undergo fairly rapid changes in appearance. For the difference that just one day can make, compare NS3681 : A slime mould - Badhamia lilacina (plasmodium), which shows the same specimen on the previous day (the pictures were taken 27½ hrs apart). The present view shows many dark sporangia (spore-producing structures), while the areas that remain yellow are not yet quite so developed. Unless there are examples of the vivid yellow plasmodium nearby, the darker mature stage is easy to miss among the vegetation.
