Marmalade Hoverfly

Episyrphus balteatus

Description

Wing length 6 - 10mm. This is a very distinctive hoverfly as it has two black bands on segments three and four, which is unique. The thorax is shiny brown with pale lines and the abdomen is orange with black markings. Some specimens can be very dark or almost entirely black.

Habitat

Can be found in a wide range of habitats and is almost ubiquitous. The larvae feed on aphids in low herbage as well as on tree foliage.

Status and distribution

Probably our commonest hoverfly and, as they overwinter, can be seen in any month. Numbers are boosted in summer by immigration. Widespread throughout Britain and Nottinghamshire and very common at Netherfield Lagoons.

Best time to see
