Lonicera caprifolium or Honeysuckle is a vigorous, deciduous climber with light bluey green, oval leaves and very fragrant yellow tubular flowers that can be tinted with pink.
This is a perennial favourite in cottage gardens and for gardeners that like fragrance in their backyards. Some consider it to be an old fashioned plant as it has been seen in many illustrations and photos climbing over trellises and porchways for centuries.
Honeysuckle, perhaps more than any other plant typifies romantic, country living - perhaps the ultimate symbol of bucolic bliss.
And it is an easy plant to grow - perhaps too easy in that it will scramble over anything that will get it upwards to the light, with twining stems reaching out to grasp the smallest nook or cranny to hold on to. As such they do need controlling or they can get away from you and become messy.
The orange to red fruits that follow will attract birds to your garden.
