A frost-hardy shrub that produces small, green leaves that release a strong aroma when bruised.
White and mauve flowers are produced in summer.
Its foliage is used for cooking, infusions (tea) and compared with English thyme the leaves are much sweeter. It is also used for medicinal purposes including antiseptic, parasiticidal, deodorant, gargle and cure for migraines, hair loss and flatulence.
It's also very nice in the bath and will preserve meat (wonder if there's a connection there?).
