Crataegus

Crataegus or Hawthorns have diverse flowers and fruit, are extremely hardy and ideal for the smaller garden. They are deciduous, occasionally semi-evergreen and will tolerate a wide range of soils, urban pollution and coastal conditions.

Known as the “father of the heart” for its antioxidant properties in flowers, shoots and leaves to help angina and blood pressure. Some fruits are particularly edible such as Crataegus arnoldiana, pedicellate and ‘Big Golden Star’. They also make excellent jellies.
