Cornelian Cherry

There are several fruiting forms of the ornamental tree Cornus mas and these are known as Cornelian Cherry trees. These specially bred forms, primarily from eastern Europe, have large, glossy red, cherry-like fruits. Perfect for making into highly nutritious jellies and compotes, and can also be eaten raw or dried.

They also have attractive, small but abundant yellow flowers that appear in February, adding cheer to the winter landscape.

Cornus mas is described in the ornamental section. Oval leaves turn purple in autumn. Cornelian cherry trees are best grown in a moist, but well-drained soil and in full sun or partial shade.
