Johann Weinmann (1683-1741) was a German apothecary and botanist who is best known for having written and edited one of the most important botanical works of the 18th century.

The FLORILEGIEUM PHYTANTHOZA ICONOGRAPHIA is a monumental work whose creation required 12 years of work for the production of 8 folio volumes and more than 1000 engraved plates.

The text, which gives scientific but also therapeutic indications, earned him a long dispute with apothecaries and local doctors. But the most spectacular part remains the 1000 engraved illustration plates. The precision of the images is the result of a revolutionary new process using Mezzotinto and the hand-colored watercolor finish. The Phytanthoza is the first botanical work printed in color. Weinmann also secured the technical part of the engraving from famous professionals like Seutter or Ridinger.
