Tortula ruralis, commonly known as “Star Moss”, is a striking moss that, as
its name suggests, resembles a cluster of small stars. One of its most interesting qualities is that Star moss has the ability to become dormant for many years. Once the moss dries out it remains alive, but not actively growing. When water is provided again, Star moss will become metabolically active again even after many decades of desiccation.

Due to its very exotic appearance, it is usually used by hobbyists as a decorative tool in their enclosures. However, Star moss has many beneficial qualities other than its look. It can also be used to protect small creatures looking for coverage as well as to stabilize soil and reduce erosion. -Bantam Earth

Not at all! Moss loves the cold, even grows happily under snow…and trust me, shipping during the winter won’t bother it a bit. :)

“Mosses grow in many different environments, from cold snowy mountains to baking hot deserts. Different species have adapted to survive in extreme conditions. Studies have shown that the lowest temperature they can photosynthesise (turn energy from sunlight into food) is around -15ºC and the highest is around 40ºC. In hot environments like prairies or deserts, one that mosses tolerate heat is by becoming dormant (dried out). Some mosses have even been known to survive temperature highs of 100ºC and lows of -272ºC. That's a resilient little plant right there!”
