Identification notes

This large and lovely pleurocarp is surprisingly easy to miss in the field, for it often grows in very mossy places where other large, much-branched mosses such as Rhytidiadelphus loreus and Eurhynchium striatum are abundant. With its pleated leaves and red stems, it looks like an imaginary cross between them.

Examination of a shoot with a hand-lens will dispel any doubt about its identity. As the image gallery shows, its leaves have a highly unusual shape and resemble little else.
