Identification notes

This is one pleurocarpous moss where identification is straightforward and can be made in the field. It forms  loose wefts (similar to Pseudoscleropodium purum) in partially shaded and often base rich habitats such as along the edge of tracks and paths through woodland. It is typically a pale green colour with cuspidate and shining branch tips, and the stems themselves tend to be pinnately branched in one plane. The characteristic feature is that the leaf apex is drawn out into into a long hair-like extension. These extend outwards, giving the shoots the appearance of pieces of string, and are easly visible with a hand lens.
