The male has a reddish-brown to olive-green forewing. The female is pale brown, light green or pale reddish-brown. The hindwing is a rich orange-yellow with a broad black border. It is found in most of the British Isles, but not northern Scotland. It is widespread but local in Ireland. It is most frequent in broad-leaved woodland, and other well-wooded areas. There is one generation from July to September. It over-winters as a small larva. Larvae feed on a range of herbaceous plants, such as Common Nettle, Primrose and Broadleaved Dock.
