Nothing can really prepare you for the emotional and spiritual fallout of losing a loved one, especially when it's one of your own children. It's almost impossible to find God's will or a redemptive purpose in the tragedy, and the feelings of disconnection, fear, despair, and apathy can threaten the very foundation of your faith. However, the journey of grief and trauma is not a hopeless one.

When Mike and Malinda McSpadden lost their first son, Mikell, it was the beginning of a painful journey with many twists and turns, but through it all, they held fast to their faith in Jesus and learned some valuable lessons about dealing with the worst things that life can throw at us. In this book, Malinda shares a few of those hard-earned lessons honestly, without pulling any punches, in the hopes that you can find some encouragement in the midst of your own painful journey.

I appreciated the testimony of God’s goodness without “churchy” cliches. This book was honest and vulnerable in a refreshing way. I found it encouraging that grief, anger and disappointment can be part of a faith journey. The message I read between the lines is that God’s love is enough to carry us through life’s most painful seasons.

Malinda’s ability to use her story, her faith, and her grief to reach others and help them pull themselves out of their own grief is incredible and inspiring. This is a book anyone who has experienced any kind loss should read. It is both helpful and beneficial to anyone trying to start their healing journey.

I read this from cover to cover in two days. The simple, powerful, and candid delivery makes this an easy read. I appreciated the detail in the chapters and the integration of experience, scripture, advice, and summaries. This is real and relevant for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one or any other trauma. Highly recommended!

Malinda’s writing voice has the ability to cut through the fog that surrounds the place of grief. She meets the reader vulnerably with truth in a clear space that lends clarity and language to those walking out grief themselves or even alongside others - truly her willingness to open up about her own journey has made a way for others.

When we lose a loved one, a lot of the advice or encouragement we get from well-meaning people doesn’t really help. I appreciate the candid, honest approach taken by Malinda. She doesn’t sugarcoat it, but she still takes very much a faith-filled approach. I think this book has the potential to help a lot of grieving and hurting people.
