About this item

Dianthus arenarius forms low mounds of blue-green foliage, and in the summer growing on little stems are 1 inch fragrant blooms. This variety has white blooms, and it will bloom throughout the summer especially when the spent blooms are deadheaded.
This dianthus is an 8 inch tall perennial growing in USDA zones 3 - 8.
This Dianthus only reaches 8 inches in height, so it works well edging the front of the border or as a general ground cover. It makes a wonderful container plant as well. Arenarius likes to grow in full sun and in well-drained soil and is usually deer resistant.
Start the seed indoors several weeks before the end of frost season. Or, directly start the seed outdoors after frosts have passed. Firmly press the seed into the soil but do not cover it.
Sowing Rate: 1000 seeds per 20 square feet. Keep the seed moist. At a temperature of 65 - 70F, normal germination is within 21 days. Since this variety is a perennial, if the seed is not started in early spring, flowering might be delayed and not occur until the second year.

Dianthus (Dianthus Arenarius White)

Easy-to-grow from seed, these white, 1-inch blooms adorn Dianthus Arenarius on its narrow, blue-green leaves. When in bloom (which occurs in summer), the flowers have a sweet scent. Dianthus Arenarius white is a good plant for the xeriscape rock garden or the front of the border. Since this plant only reaches a height of about 8 inches but spreads 12 inches wide, it also serves well as a ground cover plant. You won't regret adding this little beauty to your garden or landscape!

This Dianthus perennial plant needs well-drained soil, as well as an area of full sun. Planting flower seeds at the edge of a rock garden or wall works well. After it finished blooming, cut the stems back to foliage to encourage a second bloom season in late summer. Dianthus Arenarius is a fairly drought-tolerant ground cover plant.

How to Grow

Sow dianthus seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Use a sterile starter mix and surface sow seeds before covering lightly with soil.

Keep seeds moist until germination. Under proper conditions, seeds will germinate in 1-3 weeks. Transplant established seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.

For directly sowing these seeds outdoors, wait until danger of frost has passed, and directly sow seed into prepared beds. Lightly cover 1/16 inch and keep seeds moist.
