About this item

  • LIGHT & SOIL: Barberry bushes should be planted in full sun or partial shade. These robust plants can tolerate a variety of soil types, but ideally, they enjoy loamy, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5.
  • WHEN TO PLANT: The best time to plant seeds outdoors is in the fall, as they require cold stratification to germinate and this will happen naturally over the winter months. They will germinate in early to mid-spring.
  • SOW: After you have cold stratified the seeds, mix together equal parts compost and vermiculite or perlite in a seed-starting tray. Lightly moisten the medium, and sow seeds a quarter of an inch deep and two inches apart, then cover the tray with plastic.
  • GERMINATION: Place the tray of seeds in an area where temperatures are consistently between 55-65°F. Maintain even moisture in the potting medium but do not allow it become waterlogged. The seeds should germinate in one to four months.
  • USDA ZONE: Barberry shrubs typically grow best in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 8.

Product Description

This European barberry is a broad deciduous shrub that has become naturalized in the United States. It is in the leaf from early spring to late fall and the seeds ripen in the fall. The tiny yellow flowers appear in late spring to early summer and have an unpleasant odor. It has three-parted spines at the base of the leaves. European barberry can be grown as a medium-size hedge, but it does not tolerate extreme maritime exposure. The plant is often found growing in woodland, as a hedge, or along roadsides. It prefers a sunny position in moist loamy soils but can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soils. It also tolerates semi-shade (light woodland) and dry or moist soil but requires moist soil when grown in the shade of trees.
