About the author
Gerard Gorman has published 13 books on birds and other wildlife. His main ornithological interest focuses on woodpeckers (Picidae) and he is regarded as an authority on this family. He has travelled all over the world to study these fascinating birds and, indeed, 7 of his books are on woodpeckers: Woodpeckers of Europe (Bruce Coleman 2004), Woodpeckers of the World (Helm), The Black Woodpecker (Lynx Edicions 2011), Woodpecker (Reaktion), Woodpeckers (Bloomsbury), The Wryneck (Pelagic Publishing) and most recently The Green Woodpecker (Pelagic Publishing). Gerard also established the Facebook group Woodpeckers of the World, which has over 8000 members. He is also keenly interested in wildlife tracks and signs and is author of Central and Eastern European Wildlife (Bradt) and A Pocket Guide to Tracks and Signs (Bloomsbury). Gerard is a very experienced birding & wildlife guide, especially in Eastern Europe. He founded Probirder (www.probirder.com), a guiding service for birders and wildlife watchers visiting Central & Eastern Europe over 30 years ago. His knowledge of the wildlife and birding sites of the region is second to none, having visited every country from the Baltic in the north to the Black Sea in the south.
