Box 19395-1454, Tehran 1985813111, Iran (asef_iran@yahoo.com) In the framework of collecting and identifying of fungi of Iran, specimens of an interesting fungus were collected and identified as Phleogena faginea (Fr.) Link based on Oberwinkler & Bandoni (1982). The characteristic features of specimens were as follows: Fruiting bodies with head (capitulum) and stalk resembling the sporangia of some myxomycetes. Young basidiocarps club-shaped with weakly differentiated head and stipe. Colour of young basidiomes whitish to cream, becoming gray, dark brown to blackish with age. Capitulum smooth to furfuraceous, up to 4 mm broad. Stipe irregularly cylindrical, up to 6 mm long and to 0.3 mm in diam. Fruiting bodies grow in irregular aggregations on woody substrates. Fertile hyphae hyaline, tortuous, branched and with clamps, producing basidia continuously. Basidia in form of basidia of Auricularioid fungi, cylindric, straight to contorted, 4-celled, each cell bearing a basidiospore. Basidiospores spherical, 4–8 m and light brown (Fig. 1). Material examined: Iran, Gilan province, Asalem to Khalkhal, on wood, 12.10.2014, Asef (IRAN 16591 F). Fries in 1818, classified this fungus among the Gasteromycetes and Schroeter placed it in Tulostomataceae (Oberwinkler & Bandoni 1982) From macro-morphological viewpoint, fruit body of fungus resembles to true slime molds, but presence of clamp connection show that, it is a higher basidiomycete. Considering presence of phargmo or heterobasidia, species was regarded as Protobasidiomycete, near genus Auricularia (Shear & Dodge 1925). Study of cellular structures showed that, there are symplechosome and metaphasic SPBs and placed species in class Atractiellomycetes from Pucciniomycotina (Aime et al. 2006, Bauer et al. 2006). Despite extensive geographical distribution in Europe, North America and Australia, Phleogena faginea is considered as rare fungus in the world.
