Powers, Hawke, and Langford To recognize and renew the bond between the king and his closest companions, his hetairoi, the ancient Macedonians celebrated the festival of Hetairideia. We can think of no better title under which to collect the studies penned in honor of Lindsay’s retirement and presented to him among his peers and former students at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Association of Ancient Historians, the professional organization that he has served so sellessly including two terms as its president. As Lindsay once wrote of Alexander, “[he] had a penchant for doing all things greatly…, a charisma [that] could get his men to do things even they didn’t dream they could do.” Replace “men” with “students” and these statements are equally true of the man who wrote them. HETAIRIDEIA Over the course of more than four decades at the University of Utah, Professor W. Lindsay Adams has established himself as a leading international scholar of ancient Macedon and inspired generations of students with his award-winning pedagogy. As he brings his teaching career to a close, his peers and students have gathered to honor his accomplishments and his legacy with fourteen essays. More than a colleague and a teacher, Lindsay has been a friend and mentor whose wisdom and advice has beneitted the contributors to this volume in ways they could never hope to repay. This book goes some small way toward expressing the enormous respect, gratitude, and affection he enjoys among the great many people whose lives and careers are much improved for having known him.
