The first part of an annotated spider checklist for the Altai (Altaiskii Krai and Republic of Altai) contains 51 spider species of 22 genera and 6 families (Agelenidae, Araneidae, Clubionidae, Corinnidae, Dictynidae and Eresidae), of which 15 species are newly recorded from the Altai. Two poorly known species, Mastigusa macrophthalma (Kulczyński, 1897) (female) and Eresus cinnaberinus (Olivier, 1789) (male), are illustrated. The taxonomic status of Eresus bifasciatus Ermolajev, 1937 stat. n., raised to full species, is redescribed and illustrated. Eresus bifasciatus Ermolajev, 1937 stat.n. Introduction The first record of spiders of the Altai was made by Simon [1895], who reported on six species from the territory of Russian Altai, mainly from the western slope of Sailyugem Mt. Range. In 1928, a small paper was published by Ermolajev [1928], who described a new species Aranea charitonowi, currently a synonym of Aculepeira carbonarioides (Keyserling, 1892) [Platnick, 2012]. The first special paper devoted to the Altaian spiders was published by Ermolajev [1937], who listed 55 species of which 48 were recorded from the Russian Altai and seven from the Mongolian and Kazakhan Altai. Following the interruption in arachnological studies of almost 40 years, the paper devoted to the wolfspiders of West Siberia was published by Lobanova [1976], in which the author reported on 37 species (three from the Altai Territory). In her next work, Lobanova [1978] described a new species of Lycosidae from the Altai. In the following decade only a couple of arachnological papars devoted to Araneidae were published [Ryabikova, 1985, 1989]. In the following years 31 papers devoted to the spiders of Altai have been published [Eskov, 1992; Eskov, Marusik, 1992; Ovtsharenko et al., 1992; Logunov, 1992a, b, 1996, 1998; Logunov et al., 1993; Logunov, Marusik, 1994, 2000a, b, 2003; Ovtsharenko et al., 1995; Kurkov, 1996; Logunov, Hêciak, 1996; Marusik et al., 1996; Marusik, Logunov, 1998, 2009; Azarkina, 1999; Efimik, 1999; Logunov et al., 1999; Tanasevitch, 2000, 2010, 2011; Azarkina, Logunov, 2001; Rychkov, 2001, 2003; Levina, Mikhailov, 2004; Maloletko et al., 2004; Marusik et al., 2004; Volkovsky, 2006; Szita, Logunov, 2008; Marusik, Fomichev, 2010; Volkovsky, Romanenko, 2010; Fomichev, Marusik, 2011a, b; Trilikauskas, 2012]. Of them the largest and most important was the work by Marusik et al. [1996], in which 280 spiders species were recorded including 13 ones described as new to science. In the latest years a number of field trips have been undertaken to the two administrative regions on Russian Federation — Altaiskii Krai, and especially to the Republic of Altai. A high local endemism of certain spider groups (e.g., the genus Acantholycosa [see Marusik et al., 2004]) allows us to assume that this number will be significantly increased by further arachnological studies of the Altai. 200 G.N. Azarkina, L.A. Trilikauskas This paper presents the first part of check-list of all spiders of Altai. First part contains families from Agelenidae to Eresidae with list of material, habitat and distribution. Matherial and methods A total of 335 specimens belonging to 51 species of 22 genera and 6 families has been studied. The majority of listed species is deposited in the Institute of Systematics and Ecology of Animals (ISEA), some materials have been placed to the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University (ZMMU) and to the private collection of L.A. Trilikauskas (PCLA). The nomenclature used in this paper follows the World Spider Catalog by N.I. Platnick [2012]. Each listed species is provided with the information about its general distribution and habitat preferences. Each species recorded from the Altai for the first time is marked with an asterisk (*). Reference lists include only the works devoted to or containing the information on spiders of the Altai; for comprehensive reference lists for each species see Platnick [2012]. Abbreviations used in the figures and in the text are as follows: ALE — anterior lateral eye, AME — anterior median eye, PLE — posterior lateral eye, PME — posterior median eye, Fe — femur, PT — patella, Ti — tibia, Mt — metatarsus, Ta — tarsus. All measurements are in mm. The names of some collectors are abbreviated as follows: G.N. Azarkina (G.A.); A.Yu. Chuikova (A.Ch.), D.V. Ryzhkov (D.R.), S.I. Ivanov (S.I.), L.A. Trilikauskas (L.T.). Ventrally covered with dense white-brown hairs, dorsally covered with dense yellow-white short hairs, with 4 large patches around sigillums covered with short dark brown patches, with two small dark brown patches behind posterior big patches (Plate I: 6). Spinnerets dark brown. Book lungs covers brown. All legs brown. Femora, patellae and tibiae of all legs apically with thin stripe of white hairs. Patellae of all legs dorsally covered with white hairs, medially with narrow stripe of dark brown hairs. Palps are dark brownm covered with dark brown hairs. Palpal structure as in Figs 5–8. Habitat. Mountain Caragana-stony steppe. Distribution. Endemic of Altai Mts. Comments. This species was described as a subspecies of Eresus niger after a single male collected from the eastern Altai, the locality Sal-Ketshu (49°44' N, 87°20' E). Our male was collected about 110 km NE of the type locality (50°36' N, 88°04' E). The holotype is lost. The studied male is in agreement with the original description [Ermolajev, 1937: 599, Fig. 1], therefore we have re-described and illustrated it and also raised its status to that of full species. Book lung covers and epigastral are brownish-yellow, covered with sparse short brown hairs. Dorsally dark brown, covered with dense short orange hairs, laterally with thin white border; with 4 large patches around sigellums covered with short black hairs, laterally with thin white border (Plate I: 7). I–II pair legs are dark brown, III–IV pair legs are orange. Femora, patellae, tibiae and metatarsi of I–II pair legs apically with thin stripes of white hairs. Femora, patellae of II and all III– IV pair legs covered with orange hairs. Patellae II pair legs dorsally with whitish-orange hairs, medially with narrow stripe of dark brown hairs. Palps are dark brown, covered with dark brown haurs. Palpal structure as in Figs 9–12. Habitat. Flood plain of Ob’ River. Distribution. Trans-Palaearctic (?) nemoral range [Marusik et al., 2000]. Comments. The conductor of this species somewhat resembles that of Eresus moravicus [see Řezáč et al., 2008: figs 5B, 5E], its body and leg coloration is also similar with those of E. moravicus (see Plate I: 6 and [Řezáč et al., 2008: Fig. 4B]), except for the width of white stripes which are more close to those of E. kollari (see Plate I: 6 and [Řezáč et al., 2008: Fig. 4A]). It is likely that the Eresus species occurring in the Altai and West Siberia belongs to a new species. Note. Řezáč et al. [2008] considered E. cinnaberinus (Olivier, 1789) as nomen dubium. But E. cinnaberinus is a valid species [Řezáč, personal communication]. The problem of close related Eresus species complex need further study. Therefore we decided to use name E. cinnaberinus for our specimens till resolving this taxonomical problem.
