The last population of the Woodland Brown butterfly (Lopinga achine) in the Czech Republic: habitat use, demography and site management2008 •

Previous studies have suggested that availability of high quality habitat rather than habitat connectivity or species mobility was the limiting factor in the distribution of grassland butterflies, but were mostly undertaken on specialist species in rural areas. Consequently, this project tests the hypothesis that the quality of available habitat is more important than patch size or connectivity to the persistence of four grassland butterfly species in the West Midlands conurbation. Two of the study species are widespread (Polyommatus icarus and Coenonympha pamphilus) whilst two have a more restricted distribution (Erynnis tages and Callophrys rubi). However, unlike species with very specific requirements, all are polyphagous and can tolerate a wide range of conditions, making habitat quality difficult to quantify. Several means of assessing habitat quality were developed and tested. A detailed vegetation quadrat sampling method had the best predictive abilities for patch occupancy a...

Dynamics in a butterflyplantant system: influence of habitat characteristics on turnover rates of the endangered lycaenid Maculinea alcon2007 •
Abstract 1. Maculinea alcon, a myrmecophilic, stenotopic lycaenid butterfly is restricted to wet heathlands, bogs, and nutrient-poor hay meadows. Due to intensification of agriculture and decrease of extensively grazed meadows, many suitable habitats have disappeared and the remaining ones are highly fragmented and deteriorated.2. Historical distribution data and a comparison with the present occupation of patches show the decline of this critically endangered butterfly in north-west Germany. Most of the populations in north-west Germany are small and often geographically isolated.3. In summer 2002, two-thirds of 77 investigated potential patches were unoccupied as a result of unsuitable habitat structure and habitat fragmentation.4. Several habitat parameters were highly significantly correlated with the presence of M. alcon, in particular the distribution pattern of the host plant Gentiana pneumonanthe. Furthermore, butterflies were absent from many patches with an incidence probability below 50% with respect to patch size and isolation.5. In the nature reserve Lüneburger Heide, part of the study area, M. alcon populations have been observed since 1995. Typical turnover of local populations could be detected during these years. Extinctions and re-colonisations have stabilised the presence of this species in a metapopulation in this nature reserve.6. These data show the importance of different factors on different spatial levels influencing the presence of this endangered butterfly.

What type of hedgerows do Brown hairstreak ( Thecla betulae L.) butterflies prefer? Implications for European agricultural landscape conservation2010 •
Abstract. 1. Agricultural intensification is the main driver of global biodiversity loss. Agri-environment schemes (AES) are policy tools to counter this, but they need to be made more effective.2. Here, we focus on the resource quality of hedgerows and woodland edges, which are widespread elements of most agricultural landscapes in Europe. We analyse a set of structural factors and assess their relative importance for the Brown hairstreak butterfly. This species suffered severe declines because of agricultural intensification that may be indicative of changes for other widespread insect species that use hedgerows as resources.3. Egg-deposition preferences were assessed by comparing egg densities among hostplant sections in two study landscapes. All sections were systematically searched during four consecutive years, resulting in 745 observed eggs.4. We demonstrate that the ground plan outline and aspect of landscape elements, the relative position within landscape elements, and the amount of young hostplant growth are particularly relevant in explaining observed egg densities, and we link their importance with the butterfly’s behavioural biology.5. Our study provides evidence that management focused on providing ample young growth, and transforming the landscape element ground plan outline from linear to a scalloped pattern, would benefit ectothermic species by providing more sheltered micro-climates when they use these structural resources for breeding, feeding and moving through typically exposed agricultural landscapes. We believe that integrating such management options within general AES would translate into effective, large-scale conservation measures for Brown hairstreaks and other species alike.
