Distichium capillaceum

Paroicous. In dense tufts on soil or rocks. Stems 1–3 cm long, with dense reddish-brown tomentum near base. Leaves distichous, wide-spreading, flexuose, abruptly narrowed from an oblong sheathing base into a linear subula, 1.5–6 mm long; apices acuminate; costae percurrent or shortly excurrent; margins denticulate at apices, plane to slightly incurved; cells of subula irregularly hexagonal, (5–) 7–15 (–23) μm long, 4–9.5 μm wide, mamillose; cells of sheath linear-rectangular, (14.5–) 21–50.5 (–77.5) μm long, (2.5–) 5–10.5 (–11.5) μm wide, smooth. Setae 1–2 cm long, orange, light brown, red or reddish brown, occasionally yellowish brown, smooth. Capsules erect to sub-erect, ovoid-obloid, straight to weakly curved, 0.6–2.1 mm long. Peristome of 16 teeth divided nearly to base into 2 (–3) filaments. Opercula bluntly rostrate, to 0.7 mm long.
