Pellia epiphylla

English name: Overleaf pellia

A thallose liverwort with rather feature-less thalli that lack a visible network of angular cells, an ill-defined midrib, and margins that are not differentiated in distinct wings. The green thalli sometimes have with reddish or purplish tinges and are sparingly branched. The male organs form tiny volcanoes along the midrib, while female organs are found beneath a flap on the same thallus.

Sporophytes mature February to May.

In Scotland, Pellia epiphylla is widespread on acidic or neutral ground in wet woodland and wetlands, and just above normal water level on the side of rivers, streams and ditches. BBS distribution map
