Leptogium lichenoides

Revised name: Scytinium lichenoides

A species with a grey-brown or dark brown thallus that usually consists of a dense mat of more or less erect lobes. The margins of the lobes normally have numerous fine, outgrowths that may be branched which give a fibrillose appearance. When present, the apothecia have chestnut-brown discs with a lighter, isidiate margin.

In Scotland, Leptogium lichenoides is widespread, but local in the central and western Highlands in particular. It can be found on mossy old trees (especially ash) and rocks, walls and soil under rather damp, slightly calcicole conditions. BLS distribution map
